Our mission

The mission of the Humanities Institute is to bring scholars and aspiring scholars from all over the world together, in settings where ideas central to humanity can be discussed at the level of any university arts and humanities college, but in the spirit of democratic, intellectual camaraderie. We aim to bring the human back into the humanities.

Our workshops and classes are led by a variety of thought leaders: professors at prestigious universities, former professors bringing their skills to a wider audience, and PhD students with cutting-edge projects. Faculty are encouraged to enrol in one another's seminars too.

How it will work

Fees. Every course costs roughly a meal for two at a mid-range restaurant in Amsterdam. This covers the costs of running the Institute and pays our faculty for their time.

Enrolment. Anyone willing to engage, discuss and grapple with the ideas that have made us human is welcome. We ask for a brief statement of interest: perhaps you want a course your university doesn't offer, always wanted to study the humanities but couldn't afford a degree, miss the discussions you had as a student, or are writing something and want to talk it through.

Teaching. We especially welcome advanced seminars on a topic you are writing about, whether a book, article, PhD thesis, or other writing or art project, that you'd like to workshop with others.

Retreat. Courses run online, and at least once a year we will gather in person for a two-week retreat of themed workshops at an inspiring location in Europe.

We look forward to seeing and hearing you soon.
